Walking around Woomera ...

Woomera was so very interesting!

It was immaculately presented - and virutually deserted!

We saw quite a few cleaning and some maitenance staff but not many other people. It really felt as if we wandering is a deserted film set!

Since 1947 Woomera has been a Defence-owned and operated facility. It is located within the area designated as the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA).

There's some history of the site, here.

There's a memorial plaque for Len Beadell near the Post Office. I'm not sure when we first heard his stories but they were great.

Len was the surveyor who surveyed the intial Woomera airstrip, town and launch sites - and then went on to lead a team that created 6,500 kilometres of roads surrounding those areas. If you get a chance, try to listen his books.

Although Bandit was allowed to walk around the town and outdoor rocket display, he needed to stay outside while we took turns to view the Woomera Heritage Museum, which had some excellent displays.
