I've wanted to stay underground for many years, so booked our dog-friendly Coober Pedy accommodation months ahead. It was pretty flash and it was lovely to spread out a bit while there.
We'd been on the road two weeks by the time we got to Coober Pedy - travelling from Queensland through NSW and then into South Australia - a total of 3040km.
We stayed two nights, which gave us plenty of time for a good look around.
We particularly enjoyed viewing Faye's Underground Home and adjacent mine - where Mr Dog was welcome to join the tour.
Faye Nayler, Ettie Hall and Sue Bernard dug out rooms for the home as they mined for opal over a ten-year period from 1962 to 1972. The women opened the house to tourists in 1072 and it remains in its original condition.
Later in the day we viewed each of the three underground churches, taking turns to sit with Bandit in the car. They were all quite different from each other. My favourite was the Serbian Orthodox one with it's beautiful mosaics, stained glass and sculptures.
Blacklighting on the public fossicking area was a lot of fun. It was amazing what glowed - some plants, lint on our clothes, dog poo (left behind by other hounds, not ours), lots of things.
We didn't find any colour but we were very impressed with the glowing gecko!
