We stayed two nights in Andamooka, where we had fun exploring. Nick's evening guitar playing sparked some chatting with a more permanent camper, who mined a nearby claim - and used to own a guitar-making business. On our last night, he showed us some opal and how a black light picked up colour. We felt quite special to be trusted with his treasures.
We did most of our packing early in the morning, to avoid working under hot canvas. After getting organised, we had another look around the township - and bought a blacklight!
We filled our water tank, then drove to Roxby Downs for another grocery stock-up before heading up the Borefield Road to the Oodnadatta Track.
So much lovely countryside along the way - and many lizards scuttling off the road, or lounging in the tops of small shrubs - even before we spotted Lake Eyre (South). Wow.
The Oodnadatta Track notes mentioned seeing Lake Eyre but I was expecting a dry, salty glimpse - praps like heat haze on the horizon, not an expanse of water!
Nick worked out a starting route back in Januar and added some stops. The Oodnadatta Track was not even considered back then but really was an incredible bonus - as was seeing Kati Thanda/Lake Eyre.
Our underground accommodation at Coober Pedy had been booked months ahead but I'd seen photos of Coward Springs campground while camped at Andamooka - and requested a booking. Staying there was a highlight of our trip! Galahs were playing in the trees next to our campsite as we set up. It really was a gorgeous place and I would have loved to linger longer but we were committed to our Coober Pedy booking.
