Muntapa Tunnel

We took our time getting home from Dalby, taking a less direct route so as to visit the Muntapa Tunnel which had been on my wishlist for a while.

It was such a lovely day to visit.  We counted at least ten different types of butterfly as we walked along.  There were grasshoppers and some very neat spiders as well.  Lots of birdsong in the trees, with some flying about also.

We hadn't thought to pack lunch but there were BBQ and picnic facilities - and a hopeful magpie, who seemed disappointed by our lack of food!

I'm glad we detoured to visit.  It was a very interesting place.

There were various signs around the site, giving formal history as well as facts about the worker families, their  basic living conditions - and some local stories.

Muntapa Tunnel is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register and there is some very good information, here.

It's not possible to walk through the tunnel as there is a barricade to protect a bat colony.  We enjoyed standing quietly as the little bats zipped past.
